Financial protection in a world of uncertainty: What is the role of the insurance industry?
Join us for a high-level discussion on 11 November at the UNDP pavilion at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP27.
As the 2021/22 Human Development Report shows, insurance, alongside both investment and innovation, are key ways for countries to both tackle uncertainty and enhance financial resilience, and thus deliver better, more inclusive development.
The insurance sector has invaluable expertise and resources to resolve complex risk management challenges, with public, private and mutual insurance systems playing a major role in protecting communities and institutions from excess risk and dislocation to enable a more orderly transition such as the social and industrial transformations during the early 20th Century. Insurance and risk transfer cannot only protect vulnerable people and countries from the adverse impact of crises, it can stimulate and incentivize growth by stripping away uncertainty and risk from society.
COP27, with its renewed focus on the need to mobilize financing and a focus on implementation, is an important juncture to reflect on what the insurance industry can contribute to strengthening financial resilience to climate change risks. This event will bring together government ministers with leading insurance industry executives and multilateral development leaders.
